Overview: The goal of this course is for students to develop a thorough understanding of stories that make up the foundation of Western civilization. In the first part of the course, we will examine the major stories of the Old and New Testaments. For each Biblical story, we will read and analyze related poems and passages from longer works of prose—either from English, American, French, or German literature. Each lesson will also be accompanied by a review of famous paintings, sculptures, or other works of art based on these texts. In the second part of the course, students will familiarize themselves with the most famous Greco-Roman mythologies and again examine related poems from the Western literary canon.
