Objective: By the end of this course, students will have a full understanding of the essay portion of the private high school application process. Through seminars and writing workshops, they will learn what admissions officers expect from their essays as well as how to write a moving and memorable personal narrative essay. Students will receive heavy feedback on one draft of the longer SAO essay and also engage in one round of peer feedback.
Course Structure: The course is divided into two parts (3 hours in total). The first part focuses on the first four SAO prompts (80 minutes). The second focuses on the last SAO prompt, a personal narrative essay, and introduces students to the basic elements of persuasive storytelling (100 minutes). For all of the SAO essays, students will analyze successful samples from past applicants in order to identify strengths, weaknesses, and overall quality.
